Notion vs Leafwiki
LeafWiki is a focused, self-hosted documentation wiki rather than a full Notion replacement. Choose LeafWiki when portable Markdown, explicit tree navigation, and a small operational stack matter more than an integrated workspace. Choose Notion when the workflow depends on project tracking, connected-app search, real-time collaboration, calendars, AI meeting notes, agents, or enterprise permissions and approvals.

Decision guide
The practical reasons to choose either option, based on documented capabilities.
Choose Leafwiki if
- Small teams maintaining runbooks, onboarding guides, and long-lived internal documentation
- Engineers and homelab users who want a self-hosted, tree-structured Markdown wiki
- Teams requiring readable on-disk content and straightforward filesystem backups or Git-based backup workflows adopted with experimental status understood and accepted by the team responsible for operating LeafWiki and by
Stay with Notion if
- Teams need real-time collaborative editing
- Organizations require complex enterprise permissions or approval workflows
- Workflows depend on integrated project tracking or calendar management which LeafWiki does not document as built-in features or supported modules and therefore cannot be assumed to have parity with Notion or other all-in
Deployment and operations
LeafWiki is MIT-licensed and self-hostable. It can run as a single Go binary or Docker container, uses built-in SQLite, and stores page content as Markdown on disk without requiring an external database. Docker Compose and a Linux service installer are documented; binary builds run on Linux, macOS, Windows, and Raspberry Pi. Operators remain responsible for hosting, HTTPS or reverse-proxy configuration, writable storage, upgrades, secrets, and backups. A hosted service is only described as a ten
Migration considerations
LeafWiki provides a ZIP importer for Markdown folders, including local assets and Obsidian-style links. Its hosted-site documentation specifically says Markdown exported from Notion can be imported, but the README cautions that the importer is not a fully automatic converter for every source format. A pilot migration should verify complex Notion blocks, databases, permissions, comments, and other non-Markdown content before committing.
