Notion vs Valour

Valour is not a like-for-like Notion replacement. Choose Valour for a self-hosted, open-source community hub combining searchable wikis with real-time chat, persistent discussion feeds, voice, roles, and permissions. Choose Notion when the priority is an integrated work workspace for collaborative documents, project delivery, connected enterprise search, calendars, or AI-assisted workflows; those capabilities are not

Notion versus Valour comparison

Decision guide

The practical reasons to choose either option, based on documented capabilities.

Choose Valour if

  • Community operators combining chat, discussion feeds, voice, permissions, and a public wiki
  • Organizations requiring AGPL-licensed client and server source code
  • Teams able to operate a Docker Compose stack with PostgreSQL, Redis, media storage, DNS, and HTTPS

Stay with Notion if

  • You need collaborative documents rather than a community wiki
  • Projects require planning and delivery tracking
  • Search must span workspace knowledge and connected applications, not only wiki pages
Deployment and operations

Valour is self-hostable and its client and server are licensed under AGPL. The documented single-domain Docker Compose deployment uses PostgreSQL, Redis, local-disk media storage, and automatic HTTPS through Caddy; S3-compatible media storage is optional. Database migrations run automatically at server startup. Kubernetes deployment is not documented in the supplied repository facts, while a separate production-cluster guide is referenced.

Migration considerations

Valour documents a built-in Discord importer, but the supplied sources document no Notion importer, export compatibility, or direct Notion migration path. A Notion-to-Valour move would therefore require an independently validated content-transfer process.
